Ushuaia, Argentina, 15 December 2014 – After racing on bicycles for 138 days from the equator near Quito to the most southern city in the world, Ushuaia, James Hodges from Virgina, USA showed up as the best endurance athlete.
Alfred Mähr from Germany and Joost van Haaren from The Netherlands completed the podium. The victory in the woman’s race was for Michelle Gane from Australia.

"The Andes Trail" is a unique cycling race/expedition with a length of 11.000 kilometres through, over and along the longest mountain range in the world. A group of 35 cyclists left Quito at July 31st to finish after 106 stages at the Beagle Channel in Ushuaia, nicknamed the "End-of-the-World".
The course of the expedition varies from well paved roads to rough sandy tracks, and from old railroads to salt lakes. The high and long Andes passes over 4.000 meters, the thin air and the Patagonian wind make “The Andes Trail” to one of the most challenging bicycle races/expeditions.
The riders from 14 different countries had to deal this year with very tough weather conditions. Sunny days in the Peruvian Andes ended up in cold rain showers; thunder and lightning at the Altiplano of Bolivia caused apocalyptic circumstances; hot days in Argentina where followed the next day by snow; and the horrendous wind in Patagonia made cycling almost impossible.

It was already clear from the start that Hodges came to South-America to win the race of 11.000 km. He raced almost every day and gained time on his opponents. Mähr and Van Haaren took it easier and adapted slower to the tough circumstances in the Andes. They ended never far behind Hodges and when the race became in the second part, Mähr got stronger and stronger. He won every day dozens of minutes on Hodges and he came very close in the general classification. It was a navigation failure of Mähr and Van Haaren in the middle of the Argentinean pampas which cost both riders many hours.
Mähr kept his rhythm by gaining every day time on Hodges, but the gap couldn't be closed anymore before the finish in Ushuaia.

Michelle Gane was the full Andes Trail supreme and arrived on most stages as first female rider. She was accompanied on the podium by two sisters from Norway, Hilde and Kristin Vollan.

The next edition of the "The Andes Trail" is organised in 2016. Find all information about the race/expeditions at the website of the organisation www.bike-dreams.com or mail to info@bike-dreams.com.
